About the Committee / Body
The Academic Council is the principal academic authority of the University. It is responsible for planning, coordinating, supervising, and regulating all academic activities of the University in accordance with the provisions of the Act, Statutes, Ordinances, and Regulations.
The Academic Council plays a central role in maintaining and improving standards of teaching, research, evaluation, extension, and academic collaboration, and ensures that academic policies remain responsive to evolving knowledge systems and societal needs.

• To formulate and supervise academic policies that ensure quality education and research • To promote interdisciplinary learning, research, and collaboration • To ensure continuous improvement of academic standards, curriculum relevance, and evaluation systems • To guide the University in achieving national and global academic benchmarks

Functions of the Committee
The Academic Council performs the following key academic functions:
- Acts as the principal academic policy-making body of the University
- Coordinates and supervises teaching, research, evaluation, and extension activities
- Reviews and updates curriculum and courses of study
- Promotes academic collaboration and interdisciplinary initiatives
- Ensures quality assurance in academic delivery and assessment
- Advises statutory bodies on academic development and reforms
Duties & Responsibilities
The Academic Council shall exercise the following powers and responsibilities:
- Recommend the institution of degrees, diplomas, certificates, fellowships, scholarships, medals, and prizes
- Recommend framing, amendment, or repeal of Ordinances related to academic and student matters
- Allocate subjects to faculties
- Propose establishment of Schools, Departments, Research Centers, Libraries, Laboratories, and Museums
- Recommend creation of academic and research positions
- Promote and periodically review research activities within the University
- Prescribe qualifications and norms for examiners, paper setters, moderators, and related roles
- Review and revise courses of study based on emerging knowledge and societal requirements
- Prescribe norms for recognition of M.Phil./Ph.D. Guides and Supervisors
- Supervise academic workload evaluation of teachers
- Promote inter-school coordination and interdisciplinary programs
- Recognize and determine equivalence of degrees and diplomas from Indian and foreign universities
- Assess feasibility of academic collaborations and MoUs with other universities
- Consider academic matters referred by Schools or the Board of Management
- Perform all other duties as assigned under the Act, Statutes, Ordinances, and Regulations
Procedure of Functioning
Meetings
- The Academic Council shall meet as often as necessary, but not less than twice a year.
- Meetings are convened by the Vice-Chancellor, who presides as Chairperson.
Quorum
- The quorum for meetings shall be one-third of the total members, or as specified in the Statutes.
Decision-Making
- Decisions are taken through deliberation and consensus, and recorded in official minutes.
- Recommendations requiring approval are forwarded to the Board of Management / Governing Body, as applicable.
Secretariat & Communication
The Registrar, as Member Secretary, is responsible for:
- Issuing meeting notices
- Circulating agendas and records
- Maintaining minutes and compliance reports
Academic units may submit proposals through prescribed channels for consideration by the Academic Council.
